Who will be the next generation for Christ? Is there a bigger question today in our churches, our area….our nation? Where are the young people? I visit many churches that are studying heavily on this weighty issue. They are not coming to church, and quite frankly, neither are their parents!
Across the U.S., 80% of young families are spending their weeknights at various practices and rehearsals, and at least 2 of their monthly weekends away on ballfields and stages. The simple days of Saturday morning Little League has become an all-encompassing pursuit for the entire family.
Today, the best club teams, playing for the highest regarded coach and getting an edge on the rest has turned obsession to normalcy. There is a pressure now on parents to place their child into the BEST of circumstances in order to give the greatest odds of reaching the scholarship promised-land. This is what “good” parents today are expected to do.
With this as a back-drop, we can see a key answer to the “where are the young folks” question. It’s really more of a “what” than a “where” question…..what they are is busy!
Teens today have a fuller schedule than ever before. And franticly paced. Today homework loads are into the several hours each night, and the extra-curricular “hobby” takes the rest of the non-school hours. Today, there are Tudors, test prep courses, after-school practices and games, club membership responsibilities in order to complete community service hours for college applications.
Of course there is another side of the pendulum swing. An alarming percentage of teens have no supervision to speak of outside school, and with a lack of direction, the path into the wrong crowd of greatest appeal is wide and irresistible.
So what can be done? Where is the place to start? The launching point is to GO TO teenagers where they are…. school and practice!
FCA has the open door to assist teens with initiating and leading a Christian club at their school. Whether lunchtime or before school, FCA Huddle Clubs share the gospel of Jesus Christ. We all know that teens are going to “join” something; they are desperate for the feeling of belonging. FCA Huddle Clubs give seeking students a fighting chance to join with Christ!
So….who IS that next generation? FCA Huddle Club students!
